Comparison of Clinical Efficacy of Cefnam and Cefoperazone in Surgical Infections with Staphylococcus Aureus

Abstract
There is rising tendency of resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to other antibiotics including 3rd generation cephalosporin. So, a need for new antibiotics for staphylococcal infection was great.
Cefnam is a new drug with broad antibacterial spectrum which shows increased sensitivity to staphylococcal infection ans other gram (+), or (-) microorganisms.
Cefnam was administered to 25 surgical patients infected with staphylococcus aureus and cefoperazone was also administered to other similar 25 patients with staphylococcal infection. Most patients received 1-2g daily dose of cefnam or 2-4g of cefoperazone for at least 4 days I
We obtained following results
1. Clinical effect of cefnam was highly effective in 21 patients (84%), moderately effective in 2 patients (8%), slightly effective in 2 patients (8%), compared with those of cefoperazone, highly effective in 14 patients (56%), moderately effective in 4 patients (16%), slightly effective in 3 patients (12%), and no effect in 2 patients.
2. The mean zone diameter of cefnam to staphylococcus aureus was 25mm, but that of cefoperazone was only 13mm.
3. Microbiologic effect of cefnam to eradicate the infectious organism was in 20 patients (80%), but that of cefoperazone to eradicate the infectious organism was in 14 patients (56%).
4. Over all efficacy rate of cefnam was 96%, but that of cefoperazone was 76%.
5. Adverse reaction occurred in two patients of cefnam group (diarrhea and skin eruption respectively) and two patients of cefoperazone group (nausea).
In conclusion, cefnam is highly effective in surgical infection. with staphylococcus aureus and safe in administration to human.
